Dance culture of Indian cinema
Film industry of Indian cinema is based in Mumbai (Bombay),Maharashtra the State of India. Indian cinema is referred as “Bollywood”. Bollywood is considered to be the biggest film producer in Indian cinema and one of the largest centers of film production in the world. Dance and song sequences have been an integral component of films across the country. Dance in early Hindi films industry was primarily modeled on classical Indian dance styles and particularly those of historic North Indian folk dancers.
Typically, the actor and actresses performs with a group of supporting dancers. Today, in this contemporary film industry, choreographers often blend earlier dance style with Western dance style. Many song and dance sequences in Indian film industry features shift of location for shooting dance sequence according to the drama written in the script. Changes of costume between verses of a songs is also seen. It is popular for an actor and actresses to dance and sing as duo usually known as pas de duex in French in beautiful natural surrounding or architecturally grand setting done by set or studio designer.
Indian films have often used what are now called “Item number” (commonly used word for dance in Bollywood) where a glamorous female figure performs a cameo. The dances in Bollywood can range from slow dancing, to a more upbeat hip hop style dance .Fusion of different dance styles such as Indian classical, Indian folk dance, belly dancing, jazz, hip hop and everything else one can imagine is seen in Indian film industry.
Films such as “Any Body Can Dance”,”Devdas”,”Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”,“yeh jawani hai deewani” and so on are the movies which has some eye captivating dance performances by the well-known actresses of Indian film industry.
